Course Description:
Government/Economics whether studying the Three Branches of Government, The Bill of Rights, Supply and Demand, the Federal Reserve System or Personal Finance this course will heavily emphasize real world literacy. Students will be provided with practical knowledge and learn what it means to think politically and economically. Students will apply material learned through exercises in critical thinking, group/individual activities, and experiences in effective writing techniques that will form students into responsible citizens and give them skills that can be used both outside of the classroom and into their adult lives. I have outlined below what I believe to constitute a responsible citizen and the skills I hope students achieve upon leaving this course.
Course Objectives:
¶ Use knowledge of the past to construct a meaningful understanding of our diverse cultural heritage
¶ Use knowledge of government and politics to make decisions about governing his/her community
¶ Use methods of inquiry to both ask and to answer questions about society
¶ Use an understanding of financial principals to effectively allocate scarce resources
¶ Know how, when, and where to construct and express reasoned positions on public issues

Make-Up Work Statement:
Per the BUHSD Parent-Student Handbook, “Full make-up privileges and credit will be given for excused absences. The student is given one day of make-up time for each day missed. All work must be made up by the end of the grading period.” For students participating in interscholastic competitions, eligibility checks occur weekly. Work must be turned in by Friday each week to be included in the Monday grade check.
Technology Statement:
BUHSD’s Get Connected initiative provides students with school-issued laptops and allows for the responsible use of electronic devices as part of the learning process. Per the BUHSD Student Agreement, students agree “I will use BUHSD technology resources productively and responsibly for school-related purposes only.” Technology resources include the school network, the internet, any sites or software that support learning, any technological devices that belong to BUHSD, and any personal technological devices used while on the BUHSD campus. Devices may be used for educational purposes in the classroom when the teacher has indicated verbally that students may do so and has posted the sign.
Cheating:
All work must be your own! Cheating of any kind will not be tolerated. Cheating is defined as copying, or plagiarizing another person’s paper, homework, daily work, or test. It includes having unsanctioned notes/text messages during a test, looking at another student’s paper during a test, speaking aloud during a test in a way that would assist another student or themselves on a test, or giving your work to someone else. Any student caught cheating or helping another student cheat will receive a zero on the assignment and his or her parents will be notified.
